YEDFAS First World War Battlefields Trip

Monday, 28th April, to Friday, 2nd  May, 2014

“War and Memory”

The aim of the five day trip is to visit some of the key First World War battlefield sites, cemeteries and museums in Flanders and Picardy in order to see how the conflict has been commemorated in art, memorials and statues. Works of Nash, Blomfield, Lutyens, Kollwitz, Allward, Krieger, Sir Herbert Baker and Paulin and others will be visited.  This will be set in the context of the military history of the Battles of Ypres and the Somme. The itinerary is as follows:

Day one

York-Ypres via Eurotunnel. We shall stop at the Henry Moore Museum at Perry Green en route for lunch.

Hotel Oude Abdij, Lo

Day two

Ypres Museum, Tyne Cot Cemetery (the largest British war cemetery), Langemarck and Vladslo German war cemeteries, Hill 62 Museum and café.

The Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony at 8pm

Day three

Ypres to Arras via Vimy Ridge battlefield and Notre Dame de Lorette, one of the largest French war cemeteries.

Day four

The Somme battlefields, the Newfoundlanders’ memorial at Beaumont Hamel, the Thiepval arch memorial, Lochnagar Crater and Delville Wood and museum.

Day five

Arras – Calais – York

The cost of the trip is £495 per person sharing a room. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price. There is a £116 single supplement. If you are interested in going please fill in the application form and send a deposit for £80 made out to YEDFAS and sent to Richard Drysdale, 17 Bootham Crecent, York YO30 7AJ by Wednesday, 31st July. The deposit is not refundable. The balance is due eight weeks before departure on 3rd March, 2014, and it should be sent by cheque to me.

The cost of lunches and entrance tickets is not included in the trip.

If for any reason an individual has to cancel there is a sliding scale of refunds which is as follows:  more than 49 nine days from departure, deposit; 36-49 days, 50%; 22-35days, 70%; departure–21 days, 100%. Cancellation should be made in writing or by email to Richard Drysdale (dr5372@hotmail.com).

The 25 places on the tour will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The quoted price is based on 25 travelling and would have to be adjusted if the number going is below that level.

Eddie Brown Tours who are the trip organisers reserve the right to pass on any surcharges caused by unforeseen circumstances such as devaluation etc. These charges would be passed on by YEDFAS.

Personal insurance is compulsory on Eddie Brown Tours. This is a condition of the Bonded Coach Tour membership. The cost of insurance is £51 for the five day trip through Eddie Brown, although members may prefer to make their own arrangements.  Evidence of travel insurance is required before going on the trip.

There will be some walking involved but it will not be excessive or arduous.
