Bulletin January 2018

THE ARTS SOCIETY EBOR – BULLETIN JANUARY 2018

Dear Friends,

I hope you have all had a good Christmas and enjoyed the company of family and friends.
January lecture

Our lecture this month on Wednesday 10th January is to be given by Toby Faber and his topic is
“The American West in the 19th Century Art – Indians, Buffalo and Storms”.
As usual we will meet from 6pm at the Shepherd Hall, St Olaves, with our lecture starting at 6.30pm.

Elizabeth Evans who is the current Chair of the Arts Society North East Region is planning to join us and I am sure you will make her welcome.

Post lecture supper – 10th January

After the success of the supper we had following our AGM we have decided to organise another post lecture supper at Carluccio’s in St Helen’s Square. We are planning to do the same format as before with a pre chosen fixed price menu.

Toby Faber, our lecturer, will be joining us as well as, I hope, Elizabeth Evans.

If you are interested in joining us, please contact John Pick (wapick@btconnect.com tel.01423 330590) who will be coordinating this event. Carluccio’s have not yet released the menu (they are still on their Christmas menu as I write!) but that should be with us early in the new year and John will send this to those of you wanting to attend to enable you to make your food choices.

Bring a guest – remaining lectures of 2017/18 programme

We have three lectures left of our 2017/18 programme which all promise to be very interesting, Toby Faber in January and then Alice Foster in February speaking on Scottish Colourists (which those of you going to Edinburgh in January, with luck will find time to see amidst your busy day) and Mervyn Miller in March talking on the Arts and Craft Houses of Parker and Unwin.
We would love to share our programme with more people who would be interested in what we do and we are therefore offering each member the opportunity to bring a guest for free to one of these lectures (we thought it better to offer a choice of dates rather than picking one day to do the “bring a guest for free” offer).

Just bring a copy of this Bulletin along with you and your guest and complete their name and email details below when signing in.

New year, new programme!

As you know our lecture programme is booked well in advance and our new membership year starts in April. We hope to have membership renewal packs ready for the February lecture.
The Committee has also been working on ideas for a number of events for our programme next year which we hope to tie in to some of the lectures as well as other events which we think will be of interest to members – keep and eye on the website and your email for details
In January some of our members are going to Edinburgh to see the Turner watercolours which are only exhibited in January.

A trip to Burton Agnes to see the snowdrops, and then Sewerby Hall is planned for February. Other events in planning include a study morning visit to New Earswick (to tie in with the lecture by Mervyn Miller), visits to Tennants Auction House at Leyburn, and to Markenfield Hall and the Himalayan Garden at Grewelthorpe (only open for short periods during the year to display the plants at their best) as well as a visit to Cambridge. We hope you will find plenty to interest you but as ever do speak to any of the Committee if you have any ideas for lecture topics or trips; we value the collective ideas of our members!

Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2018 and looking forward to seeing you on January 10th.

Claire
